It was a decision we made nearly a year ago to escape the slightly depressing winter in Munich, where our main office is based. So, we spent the entire month of February 2020 working remotely from Cape Town, South Africa. It is also a sustainable way (yes, we carbon offset our flights, and made a point to fly direct even though it was more expensive) to travel and explore a new city – spending as much time as possible there and immersing ourselves in the culture. New spaces, destinations and people inspire fresh ideas and spark creativity. “I haven’t run with any other person since about 16, 17 miles into the Olympic Trials.Working remotely enables a more flexible schedule, which in turn initiates focused work. “When this came up I was just pumped and I’m just super grateful to be able to get a race in,” said Rupp, the former Oregon star who lives in the Portland area and is being coached remotely by Northern Arizona’s Mike Smith. The start/finish line was at Harms Park on the north side of Dorena Lake. The location of the race was kept under wraps as to not to draw a crowd of spectators, and the few people who did attend stayed socially distant and wore masks. ![]() Olympic Marathon Trials in February in Atlanta. The race, put on by the Eugene Marathon crew headed by Ian Dobson, was the first for Rupp since he won the 2020 U.S. The two-time Olympic medalist won a half-marathon dual with Japanese Olympian Suguru Osako on an out-and-back course in Cottage Grove, finishing in 1 hour, 22 seconds. COTTAGE GROVE - Galen Rupp finally got out of the house on Friday, laced up his racing shoes and put on a record-setting performance under a relatively cloudless sky and in front of even a fewer onlookers. ![]()
